4 GOVERNMENT SCHEMES EVERY INDIAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

Jul 31
5 min read

Most Indian households are just one accident, one illness, or one missed retirement plan away from financial stress. To close this gap, the Government of India runs four low-cost, easy-to-join social security schemes that between them cover accidental death, life insurance, old-age pension, and hospital bills. This guide explains each one in plain language what it costs, what it pays out, who should join, and how to sign up.

GOVERNMENT SCHEMES

1. Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)

Accident insurance cover for just ₹20 a year

PMSBY is India's cheapest accident insurance. For a premium of only ₹20 a year deducted automatically from your bank account it pays out ₹2 lakh if the policyholder dies or is totally disabled in an accident, and ₹1 lakh for partial disability. It covers only accidents, not illness, which is why it is often paired with PMJJBY (life cover, see page 2).

Premium

₹20 per year, auto-debited

Age eligibility

18 to 70 years

Cover period

1 June to 31 May, renews automatically

Accidental death / total disability

₹2,00,000 to nominee

Partial disability

₹1,00,000

Who should join

●Anyone with a savings bank account, aged 18–70, who wants accident cover at almost no cost.

●Drivers, delivery staff, factory and daily-wage workers, and others in higher-risk jobs.

●Families who cannot afford a full private accident policy.

How to join & claim

●Fill a one-page consent form at your bank (or via net/mobile banking) and authorise the ₹20 auto-debit.

●You'll get a Certificate of Insurance once the first premium is deducted.

●To claim: inform your bank branch immediately, and submit the claim form with the FIR, medical/post-mortem certificate, or disability certificate as applicable.

●You can enrol through only one bank account joining via multiple accounts still pays only one claim.

Keep in mind

●Keep enough balance in your account around end-May every year a failed debit lapses the year's cover.

2. Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)

₹2 lakh life insurance for ₹436 a year, no medical test needed

PMJJBY is a simple one-year term life insurance scheme. For a premium of ₹436 a year, it pays ₹2 lakh to the nominee if the policyholder dies of any cause illness, natural death, or accident unlike PMSBY, which pays only for accidents. No medical check-up is required to join, making it one of the easiest ways for ordinary families to get basic life cover.

Premium

₹436 per year, auto-debited

Age eligibility

18 to 50 years at entry; renewable to age 55

Cover period

1 June to 31 May, renews automatically

Death cover

₹2,00,000, paid on death due to any cause

Medical test

Not required

Who should join

●Sole or primary earners who want their family to have a financial cushion if something happens to them.

●Anyone who finds regular life insurance premiums or paperwork/medical tests unaffordable or inconvenient.

●Households already covered under Jan Dhan or similar bank accounts.

How to join & claim

●Submit the consent-cum-application form at your bank and authorise auto-debit of the annual premium.

●Joining mid-year? A reduced pro-rata premium applies: ₹342 (Sep–Nov), ₹228 (Dec–Feb), or ₹114 (Mar–May) for the first year.

●To claim: the nominee informs the bank branch and submits the death certificate with the claim form; the bank forwards it to the insurer.

●Only one bank account can be used to join, even if you hold several.

Keep in mind

●PMSBY and PMJJBY together cost under ₹500 a year and cover both accident and natural-cause death most advisors suggest taking both.

3. Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

A guaranteed monthly pension for life, starting at age 60

Atal Pension Yojana is built for India's unorganised-sector workers who have no employer pension. You pick a target pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month, and a small fixed amount is auto-debited from your bank account every month until you turn 60 after which the guaranteed pension begins for life. The younger you join, the lower your monthly contribution. It is regulated by the PFRDA, and the government extended the scheme through FY 2030–31 in January 2026.

Entry age

18 to 40 years

Contribution period

Until age 60 (minimum 20 years)

Guaranteed pension

₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per month, from age 60

Sample contribution

₹42/month at age 18 for ₹1,000 pension; ₹1,454/month at age 40 for ₹5,000 pension

Death benefit

₹1.7 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh corpus returned to nominee

Who should join

●Daily-wage earners, small traders, domestic workers, drivers, farmers, and gig workers with no employer pension.

●Young earners in their 20s or early 30s, since starting early keeps the monthly contribution very low.

●Anyone who prefers a guaranteed, government-backed pension over a market-linked product.

●Not open to income-tax payers since October 2022, taxpayers cannot enroll.

How it works & how to join

●Approach your bank or post office (or the eNPS portal), give Aadhaar and mobile number, and choose your pension slab.

●Authorise the monthly/quarterly/half-yearly auto-debit; you'll receive a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) card.

●If you die before 60, your spouse can continue the account or withdraw the corpus; if after 60, the spouse gets the same pension for life.

Keep in mind

●Early exit before 60 is generally not allowed except on death or terminal illness; contributions may qualify for tax deduction under Section 80CCD.
